Greetings.
Just had a call from my bro. in law who tells me that his 'computer expert' has diagnosed a u/s motherboard on his iMac g5. He is a PC man, however and doesn't want to dabble on the Mac... I have been asked to get some answers.
So here goes. I hope someone can advise.
I'm in the UK, by the way.
Will the Apple Store - nearest probably Birmingham - undertake the repair, or does Apple have a number of authorised repairers?
What would be the likely cost - basically is it worth it?
Thanks in advance. Mitcherooney

don't know the resources available in the UK. This is an iMac model with a well-known and fixable problem. There are self-repair guides such as Apple iMac G5 Motherboards DIY Repairs How to Guide - According to Jim Warholic which is good if you're handy with a soldering iron (and also very cheap - under $75 USD), or motherboard replacement/repair services available vie eBay and others (starting at about $200 USD). Apple's charge to fix the machine would be about the cost of a decent refurb iMac.

I'm going to guess that if you consider the value of an iMac G5...and you're having motherboard problems...the cost for a professional computer person to repair it (or replace the defective part(s)) is going to be a very large percentage of it's current value...and thus not worth it.

One thing to consider (I have absolutely no idea what is wrong with this iMac G5 because I haven't seen it or evaluated it)...but some of them did suffer from bad capacitors...and there is some DIY info about this on the internet. Some of the DIY repairs for this can be fairly inexpensive...but you have to have the skills & confidence to do it.

It might help if you gave us a bit more model info on this iMac G5...such as it's processor speed & screen size?

HTH,

- Nick
