iMac Driving D-Link Wireless Router

Please Help!

I have in my household an iMac and 2 wireless compatible PC laptops, I've been out and bought a D-Link DSL-G604T, which I am trying to connect to the iMac via a network cable, so that the laptops can see the connection when they need too. However, the laptops see the router beautifully and get out to the outside world with no problems, the iMac resolutly refuse to get out! So I find myself changing the adsl cable between modem and router!

The iMac does see the router as I can ping it reconfigure it etc. I just can't get out onto the internet!

Thanks in anticipation

so the imac is essentially a hub, you need to check in system preferences>network> click built in ethernet in the list, then click configure, or double click ethernet, under tcp/ip, it needs to say using dhcp, after clicking apply now, it should automatically enter the info, like ip address, etc.
and under ethernet tab, it needs to say configure: automatically.

Well I tried it as you suggested and my Mac can see the router (it updates all the dhcp settings etc.), it even tells me I am connected to the internet! However, when I open Safari or for that matter IE it won't open any pages, any ideas? I have also disconnected my adsl modem to see if that helps, and it doesn't.

Please help

I had this same problem with my D-Link and iMac due to a MAC address issue. Try 'cloning' the mac address in the set-up wizard. That's how I solved my problem anyway.

Please explain more!!! how do I do that?

Cheers

I don't know if your D-Link will have the same set-up wizard that mine does, but for mine you just log on to http://192.168.0.1 in your web browser. The user name should be Admin, and the password can just be left blank. Once in there should a a set-up wizard button on the front page. In that wizard you can set your router's MAC address by clicking 'clone MAC address' which will clone your iMacs MAC address to your router. When I set up my home network I forgot this step and was having the same problems you are having. I could ping my router, but I could not access the internet. Cloning the MAC address cleared this up.

Thanks Chris

I have just been trying to do this but unfortunatly I can't find where to set this up, the DSL-G604T doesn't seem to have a setup wizard!!

One thing I hadn't said was that I can connect my laptops wirelessly to the internet without any problem

Hmmm... no wizard huh? When I get home (I'm at the office now) I'll see how to change the MAC address mannually. Regarding the laptops, my other wireless devices still worked as well. It was only my iMac, which is connected via CAT5 to the router, that was having the MAC address issue.

It's no problem. If I can save you the two hour headache I had to endure to figure out my stupid problem I will. No one should have to go through that. :)

I'll report back in about two hours with (hopefully) some good answers for you. ;)

try this.
system preferences>network>select ethernet>click configure>tcp/ip tab>click renew dhcp lease. that will reset the ip, your ip will not be changed, just renewed.

If what macman suggested doesn't work, you should be able to change your MAC address assigned to the router in the WAN settings on your router (192.168.0.1). In the WAN settings clone your MAC address. If there is no clone option, you can find your MAC address under System Preferences>Network>Configure>Ethernet, and then manually enter that MAC address on the WAN setup page. I attached a couple of pics of what mine looks like. (yes I know the DI-514 is old and ghetto, but it was free ;) )

Also, make sure you have the latest updates installed. If you are running Panther, I know some of the latest updates were targeted at networking issues specifically related to D-Link routers. Also, 10.4.1 was just released today which also addresses some networking issues.

Still not working but I have ordered a copy of Tiger, so hopefully the cable pulling depending on whether I use the Mac or PC's will be solved when it arrives!

Thanks for our help on this one!

wireless router for imac

Hi Chris,

I was searching for some information on wireless routers for the imac and came across your chat on Mac Forums. I just signed up with Verizon to provide internet access and email accounts. They gave me a wireless router for my emac and pc and imac. The main router is connected to the emac and a wireless device to the pc but the other wireless device doesn't work on the imac. They suggested I purchase one at a retail store that will support the imac. Can you suggest one? I have one of the older imacs (grape). I just upgraded the system to panther and the memory to 156M.

Verizon said their software will work on the imac but not the hardware.

Thanks.

Kelly
