How does the display connector connect to the main board? Does it slide in parallel to the main board or does it go straight in from on top...somewhere?

I guess that entirely depends on which iMac you are talking about. Apple has revised it many times over the years. Have a look at iFixIt's teardown guides to find your answer.

I'm talking about my 27" mac. I used ifixit to disassemble my MAC to access a stuck DVD in the optical drive. Got the DVD out. Reassembly hung up on gold Zip connector. Finally figured out plug slides into the side, parallel to the main board...and silver clips must go over connector to keep it from sliding out.
No display when power turned back on! Will recheck connections tomorrow, but will probably end up taking it someplace for repair

Model A1312, EMC 242l, core i5. 2.7 27 inch (mid 2011). I bought it in 2012 at Best buy. Lost receipt. But Sony optical drive is dated 10 Feb 2012.
Is Apple store best bet for repair work?

If you have one locally, yes. If not, try to find an authorized service center.

My error, it is an EMC 2429. The Apple store is in a huge crowded shopping center. Best Buy is closer and they may just pass it on to the Apple store. Don't know for sure about that. Anybody have dealing with Best Buy on Apple Repair? Being they sold the Mac to me, I believe? Hope? they send it on to the Apple store. Got My Sony VAIO (2009) desktop up to date and am stuck using that for now.

We really should combine both your threads into one thread - I might do that later when I have time.

To answer your question above: Apple repairs at an Apple store are top notch. I wouldn't trust the Best Buy Geek squad to change batteries in a flashlight. ;D

Apple it is. I'll wait to re-open it when my one piece torx 10 and dual suction cup arrive in a week or two from Amazon. (The only torx 10 I found at Lowes was a cheap screwdriver that has removable bits. The torx head gets pulled out by the magnets when I used it.) I'll check for damage on the zip connector and try to connect everything correctly. Then to Apple if still no display.
On the other post: I could not get tweezers in between the narrow aluminum(?) case. Once I could lift the outside frame about two inches, I could have accessed the drive, but decided to follow through with the instructions to view the optical drive. That's how we become experts. Screwing up is a great educator.
