So i am a pc tech of many years, but i have very little experience on macs.

I received a 27" imac for free because it was not booting, i am not sure of its history.

Sure enough, the first time i booted it went directly into the recovery utility after failing to load, i tried to reinstall but would get stuck at icloud sign in.

I decided screw it, popped in the windows install usb and deleted all partitions and installed windows.

this is when i began to see my current issue, other than a driver issue i noticed it crash with a dark grey screen with vertical lines the reboot, at the time i thought it was driver related.

I decided to try mac os again, and this time a newer version of mac os was shown and i didnt have to log into icloud!!!

The system got completely through setup, and even to the desktop for a half hour, then i got a black screen with vertical lines then reboot, after reboot it lasted a couple minutes and got a grey screen with vertical lines, i just shut it down and left it unplugged.

This is an older mid 2010 model and here are the specs.

27" screen
Core i5 2.8ghz
32gb ram
250gb apple ssd

It could be a graphics card failure or an intermittent GPU. (Based on your description.)

The kernel panic report really does not tell us much.

Some suggestions: Test the memory. That machine originally came with 4 GB and now has 4 x 8 GB modules. Any good memory testing utility can be used.

Try booting the machine in Safe Mode: Hold down the shift key as soon as you hear the chime. Keep holding until the Apple appears. Run that way for awhile if possible.

Try resetting the NVRAM and SMC:

I get out of work at 5 and will be working on it then, if the gpu is bad is it something that can be swapped like an mx card?

Thanks for the welcoming, lol i even need to google the command functions. 😅

Yes the GPU card is removable and replaceable on that model iMac. However, a replacement card is expensive and the work involved is difficult. You can get some idea on what's involved when working on that iMac at this web site:

www.ifixit.com

Basically, the entire display has to be removed and if I'm not mistaken, the logic board (mother board) has to be removed to get at the GPU card. You can lookup the various DIY procedures at the ifixit site. Usually they're real good at explaining what needs to be done and include illustrations.

If the iMac runs in safe mode without crashing, that might indicate a software or driver (kext) problem. What safe mode does in macOS is it removes all third party drivers and only loads the Apple necessary items to keep the machine up. You might notice that safe mode also turns off the sound.

And no, your iMac does not contain the T2 security chip.

Yea the system seems to run in safe mode and that would point to software, but would that not have been fixed when i deleted all the partitions manually then started online recovery? It was el capitan and in non running state when i got it

It ran about an hour and a half in normal mode played youtube vids and i even ran cinebench successfully, lol the score was horrible haha but it definitely warmed up good during the run, even thermal throttled a little
It runs in safe mode
Certain things slow down randomly, mainly o.s. related.
I notice alot of "couldnt find... files" in the log viewer
And the system wouldnt boot when i received it.

I may take a hdd i have laying around and swap the ssd out to test it, safe mode working suggests a software issue, the ssd controls software, and if i read right these early ssds had random issues and its 11 years old now, im thinking the ssds cache could be failing.

Is there any lock outs apple placed that would stop me from putting in a western digital drive?

Will i need recovery media?

That solder blob suggests that somebody else has been mucking around in there ... never a good sign!

The power supply should be silent, but coils, transformers, and capacitors can whine if they have loose bits and hit a resonant frequency. It's rarely an actual problem, but it can be annoying. Press on the various components with a wooden stick until you find the one that can be silenced. A blob of silicone sometimes does the trick, or you can replace the component. Replacement (used) power supplies are about $50 on eBay.
Re the drive, you should be able to install any SATA HDD or SSD, but it will be missing Apple's temp sensor, which means the fan will run full blast until you install a fan control utility.
