IMAC crashed

Last week my Imac 450 DV crashed. I was using it and then left it on for an hour. When I came back the screen was frozen and it would not respond. So I shut it down and tried to restart it.. with no luck. The computer does not boot up with the CD. I tried everything to get it running again but failed each time. A folder with a question mark appears on the screen indicating that it cannot find the start up folder. Any suggestions on what I should do?

The way it's acting, see if boot to single user terminal will work, try boot and hold command S. If it does then type /sbin/fsck -fy until *****FILE SYSTEM CHANGED***** stops showing. Then I think a reinstall might need a go If nothing works, maybe it's a power supply issue

Hmm... that wont work witeshark, thats not firmware, that UNIX OS X stuff. And since the iMac can't read OS X, it can't get into single user mode.

Do you have OS 9? If you do, load that in.

There is power and the reset button works. But I can't boot up with the hard disk or a cd. Do you think it will help if I reset the pmu?

This is frustrating. OK this is acting like there is a serious hardware problem, and may need a shop visit

Just thought I would let you know what happened to my IMac. Well, a friend opened it and found that the hard disk was dead. We changed it and now it humming along fine. Unfortuanately, I lost all my data on the old hard disk.

Yeah, sadly Apple uses crappy drives (usually Maxtor) and in the iMac they have a tendancy to overheat causing premature failure. Still, I'm glad that you solved it.
