iMac 3rd Party RAM

Hi guys, looks like I'll be getting an iMac G5 soon and wondered if I could use any DDR400 PC3200 memory modules. At first I wanted to just add 1 stick of 1gb to the 512mb already there, could I do that or do you have to have exact pairs or is it only compatable with apple's memory?

Yes you can. I purchased some from www.newegg.com and it works great. There are some brands that are better than others. Corsair, Kingston, and Crucial are all very good brands. Stick with something good, afterall, you are buying a mac.

By the way, the iMac booklet that comes with the unit shows you step by step how to install more ram.

3rd party RAM

I was looking over the options they have for that RAM from newegg.com and just got a little confused since I have never done this either (my new IMAC G5 is being ordered this weekend). This is the product I saw there with the 1GB specs...will this one work on my IMAC?

"CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Unbuffered System Memory Model VS1GB400C3"

Wasn't sure about the unbuffered and 184 pin spec. If this is it the deal is certainly better than buying it fom Apple.

That Corsair ram with work just fine with you system. I have 2 gigs of it in my PowerMac G5 and one gig of it in my Imac G5, works just fine. If you want it even a bit cheaper they also have some Rosewell 1 gig chips that work just fine with the mac.

Here's a hint: Go to www.crucial.com, look up your exact mac, and Crucial will tell you the exact ram required for your particular unit. You can buy it from them or shop the deal at oter websites. The manuals you get with your mac also tell you the exact kind of ram required. Or go to Apple's support pages for your particular mac, and there will be a link to memory specifications, much like this one:
