IMac 10.10.8 software

Hey guy's, I rlly need your help, here's the thing, I bought a Imac of a friend, this got the 10.6.8 version, but when I was trying to install the Apple essensials with the cd, it didn't install because I have to make this actualisation, so what do you guys recommend? It is safe? Do I install this new software, should I wait to get better? Does this new actualisation ruin my other programs?
Rlly need your help, cause I have so much to do with Iphoto!!!

- What CD are we talking about?
- And while we are at it...why not tell us exactly what model iMac this is? There have been a lot of iMac models over the years.
