I have three installed, plus the mobile versions on two iPhones and two iPads. The latest version still opens all of the old doc and docx files, the old xls and xlsx files, plus you get Outlook and Powerpoint as well.So, my recommendation is to switch to the 365 subscription, but you don't have to do that first.
