I have been having terrible kernel_task memory issues lately. I downloaded EtreCheck. My report is below. I have no idea how to make heads and tails of it. Is there anything there that sticks out?

This week i downloaded the newest version of All2MP3 and it put MacKeeper on my computer. I deleted it but I wonder if it did something else. This problem started just about the time i downloaded it.

EtreCheck version: 5.3.2 (5034)

I have been having terrible kernel_task memory issues lately.
What do you mean by "issues?" How is this actually affecting your computer use? Is it slow, stopped, what? What tells you that you have these issues? I did notice that your internal drive is really quite full, you might try moving some things off to an external to make more free space.

The issues are I have only 3 or 2 % of idle space in the CPU graph, and as a result, when I try to record music, it gets all messed up.

I'll try booting in safe mode. Let's say I do that and the problem disappears.....how do I begin figuring out which apps it might be?

As far as hard drive space, yeah, I'll clear some up. It can't help.

There is always a brisk discussion about the minimum Free Space you should have on the Mac's Internal Drive (an SSD in your case).

Some say 10%, others 20%; but I think everyone would accept that having just under 3% of free disk space is way too small for normal working of the SSD and the macOS.

I am simply endorsing Jake's remark on the same subject. In practical terms, you need to get at least 45-50GB off your Internal SSD. Some would argue a lot more than that.

Apart from having a large number of Login Items (mentioned by Bob), no major issues are being detected. Thus clearing 50GB++ off your SSD may be all that is needed.:)

Sounds good. I'll try. FWIW, Im pretty sure my drive is not SSD. Not sure if that helps diagnosing anything.

Your report says it's SSD. I would also endorse Bob's suggestion in Post #3. Use the "-" button to delete some of your login stuff that maybe you don't need loaded at login. All of that stuff takes up memory right from the beginning.

1) Not enough hard drive space
2) Way more applications/daemons/startups/extensions than the average user has. (more things running means kernel_task will be larger)
3) A Samsung Brew USB modem with poorly written software that is continuously respawning (restarting itself with a new connection ID)
4) you've tried deleting some apps by dragging to the trash instead of running the uninstaller, leaving junk (which may or may not be still running)

I wonder if it's MacKeeper cause I've had this much hard drive space for a while but havent had this problem.

That said.....

1 - I reduced the number of start up extensions. Anything else I can stop vis-a-vis damons?

3 - I am not even using a Samsung brew modem. How do I stop that software?

4 - I deleted MacKeeper with MalwareBytes. I am trying this github thing but it isnt working. I've saved the file on my MBP as "mackeeper.sh" and when I put in the terminal "chmod +x mackeeper.sh
" then i get the answer "No such file or directory"

It seems like there might also be some potentially conflicting/extraneous stuff there as well. For example: In the Cleanup section of the reportt there are a couple of items listed for LastPass. In the Safari Extensions section an extension for OnePassword is shown. Things like that might not be conflicting with each other but having both leaves some extraneous files around.

So, I started up in safe mode.....and the kernel problem persisted. I cleaned up nearly 10% of the HD and turned off some of the background apps too.

Any thoughts on what the issue might be if it also happened when I was in safe mode?

(Thanks so much for the advice. Truly. I'd be screwed right now without this!)

The one strange thing I see in the second Etrecheck report is the write speed to the drive. The report says: Write speed: 111 MB/s Read speed: 1698 MB/s. It was more in the first report, about 290 MB/s, but that's still low for an SSD. The read is find, but that is a terrible write speed for an SSD. My SSD, for example, shows 650 to 750 MB/s. The read speed is similar to yours. Those write speeds might be a symptom of something wrong with the SSD itself, or it could be a byproduct of just having too much on the drive.

And can you elaborate on the "kernel problem" a bit more? I know you said if you record music it's messed up, but what does that mean? Messed up how? Do you get any error messages? Other than the write speed, I don't see anything too far out of whack on the reports.

When the kernel issues are happening, the music has latency issues because the hard drive is just moving slow, so if I record live, it gets wonky. When the kernel issues are happening, everything just slows down. I open a finder window and it happen slowly and in steps (first the outline...then the words come in), or I open another tab in Chrome and it takes forever.

I still think the problem might just be malware only because it's the same week I downloaded All2MP3 which gave me MacKeeper, and even though I've uninstalled both of those, it just seems to me the most likely scenario. I did run Malwarebytes and nothing happened.

Well, one other strange thing is that Etrecheck thinks there is a runaway process. And it shows 200%+ in "Other" processes. You can open Activity Monitor to the CPU tab, sort by CPU usage and see what is taking up so much CPU. This is the portion of the second report I am looking at:
CPU Usage Snapshot:
Type Overall
System 17 %
User 21 %
Idle 63 %

Top Processes Snapshot by CPU:
Process (count) CPU (Source - Location)
Other processes 211.31 % (?)
Google Chrome 48.42 % (Google, Inc.)
Logic Pro X 16.91 % (App Store)
EtreCheck 8.27 % (App Store)
Activity Monitor 3.80 % (Apple)

Top Processes Snapshot by Memory:
Process (count) RAM usage (Source - Location)
EtreCheck 1.10 GB (App Store)
Logic Pro X 808 MB (App Store)
Google Chrome 389 MB (Google, Inc.)
Finder 247 MB (Apple)
Backup and Sync 180 MB (Google, Inc.)
Note that nothing is really hammering the CPU except that "Other" category, but even so, it is 63% idle. And also, nothing is using a lot of RAM, either. Your original post said the kernel task was taking a lot of memory, but the reports don't support that. Finally, the recently installed section doesn't show All2MP3 or MacKeeper as having been installed in the last month. I'm confused because what you say and what the report is showing don't seem to match very well. What am I missing?

Well, I had already uninstalled AllMP3 and MacKeeper so maybe that's why they dont show? All2MP3 was an update, not a new install. On the install, I got elements of MacKeeper on my computer.

I think I'm not being specific enough with my language. Where I see the kernel issue is on CPU tab of Activity Monitor. I'll often have 1-3% idle, and it can tell me it's taking up 400-500% of the CPU%. I'm guessing that's the runaway process. It's not constant but it comes and goes.

Ok, we are making progress. On that CPU tab, if you click on the header for "% CPU" it will sort the items in the list by usage. Do that to get the heavy users at the top and wait for the runaway. See what is taking up the CPU.

The original post referred only to memory, so I'm assuming that is not the real problem, but CPU usage is. Is that correct? (It helps to be clear on what the problem really is.)

Oh, and even if you did uninstall it, I think it would still show in the recent installs. I haven't tested that myself, but the logs don't change just because you uninstall something.

So, when I'm having that problem, the thing taking up the CPU is kernel_task
Every time.
