Billy I have had this issue numerous times over the years. The advice is usually the same. Plug the printer into your computer, turn it on and perform a software update on your computer from the Apple menu > Software Update. You may get a dialogue box which offers to download software for the printer. It may take a couple of tries.
Unfortunately that may be the case. I just gave away a 5 year old HP printer scanner for that reason. It works fine with my friend's old PC. I wasted an hour on the HP site trying to find drivers, no luck. For less than $100 it's easier to buy a new one.
I managed to get hold of a Canon with refillable external ink tanks.
