We used to lock the doors on our old car using the keyfob or an actual key. We would then test to make sure the door was locked by pulling up on the door handle. The new Outback uses a keyless entry system. If you have the electronic "key" on your person and are in range of the car pulling up on the door handle unlocks the car.
