l am not knowledgeable with video formats or computers in general, l have QuickTime and tried to reduce the size of an mp4 file but it actually increased the size. l don't mind reducing the quality of the video and audio. l also have VLC , that did reduce the size, but that converted the video to MLV? so no audio. if VLC can't reduce the size without sacrificing the audio, are there any websites that do this without having to downloading software? thanks in advance

The HandBrake interface can be intimidating until you get used to it. You might find this video helpful to get you started.

I haven't used VLC much for converting files. For me, it's great for playing files nothing else will touch but I find the method for converting files a little cumbersome. Just my opinion.

I suspect the results will be roughly the same as long as the settings are the same. Most of these programs rely on the same binaries to do the conversion. It's just the "skin" of the program that looks different. The method for choosing settings may differ a bit but the real work is being done by the same tools.

There are several video converter/transcoder programs in the App Store as well. Some are free and others for purchase. There might be something there that will help.

Another vote here for Handbrake. Once you get the gist of how to use it, to tweak the quality settings etc., you'll be well pleased with it, and amazed at just how much compression you can achieve with minimal quality loss. :)
