How long did it take you to download the new OS X update 10.6.3 The reason I ask is that mine too around 3.5 hours and to me that seemed extremely long. It is on a new 27" iMac. The update was 755MB. Would the main reason be internet connection and speed?

Back to my old 2.2GHz C2D MB after selling my MBP and wondering what my next Mac will be :)
It was a very slow update, I wasn't watching it, but I think mine took maybe upto 15mins..... 3.5hrs is rediculous!
Sounds like slow internet connection.
Go to Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test and once you have done the speed test, under the results you will have copy forum link, and you can paste it in the response to get image as below

That and traffic on Apple's servers. Whenever a new, very large update is released, there's probably tens if not hundreds of thousands of machines simultaneously trying to download it. So, you're contending with all of those other people for bandwidth.

Mine took about 15 minutes, 8 or so was for the download of the Combo updater package.

Okay thanks guys, I will try out the speed test later because right now it is still downloading(on hour 2 and says about 1 more) but is internet connection is the main thing that effects the download rate? If so that would be my problem because I am at school and we have time warner and it SUCKS! It is the slowest and crappiest I have ever seen before

As Cwa107 stated, the flow of traffic would have a bit to do with it.... but your school's internet connection would definitely be the culprit!

ya I hate time warner, it sucks. Also I know that when downloading torrents I will be lucky to break 70kb/s is that pretty slow also? My internet seems to be running fine today and not real slow or delays or anything so not sure why my download is taking forever. And it is an apartment off campus so it is just me and my roommate on our network. Any tips to speed this up or investigate problems?

Mine was 245MB or around and took maybe 5 or so to download. My DSL is only 3MBs. Took maybe 2 minutes to install and reboot if that.

Size of update depends on machine, and Download speed has a lot to do with the speed of your Internet and like CWA said, the Apple Servers were being hammered also!

Too many devices to list

What's with all the different sizes? I've now seen everything from ~250MB to ~750MB (the 750 was upgrading a 10.6.2 machine). Mine was ~450MB, upgrading from 10.6.2. Were you upgrading from 10.6.2?

Mine was 755 from 10.6.2 but I think there is some extra in mine because I was behind on an iMovie update that is going with this one

There have been many updates like that varying in size since back in the Tiger days. My Power PC got a Security update today also for 10.5.8 and it was around 250MB also like the C2D Mini. Mine was an upgrade from 10.6.2 using Software Update.

Huge install - 1.5GB for the combo update after it's unpacked.

Mine took under 5 minutes to download the ~750MB file.

Strange isn't it? I can't imagine why the sizes are so different. I upgraded from 10.6.2 and my download was the larger size (750). ??

Regards.

Depends on model to model and the huge variations of Macs available.

You say you're off campus, but is it still the school's Network you are getting these results on?
If so, I doubt there is much you can do about it.
Is your friend in your apartment getting the same results..... and are others in school getting the same results on and off campus.

We have our own internet service through the local cable company(time warner) so it is completely separate from the school. and we both get crappy connection and have no clue why.
