How do you save your work?

I never shut my mac off. Why would you need to?

On another note, I do back up my entire documents/personal folders to my passport drive each night at work.

I'm trying to calibrate my battery and it says to save your work before your computer goes into sleep mode.

That just means to save any changed files you've been working on such as text documents , keynotes , photos or any documents you have changed so you won't loose the progress made on those items.
