I'm brand new to the forums and have a Mac Pro with OS X 10.9.4. Currently I use Pages and NeoOffice to access Word and Excel documents. I now need to modify PowerPoint documents and am considering Office packages. I don't know enough to proceed from here. Can someone offer some options?

Welcome to Mac-Forums..

Keynote will modify PowerPoint files, but might have a little stumble on the initial load and things might not look the same..

If you are doing a lot of work with MS files, then best to stick with their tools for ease..

Thanks
I'm just dumb enough on Macs to not know how to get PC tools on my Mac. I assume MS sells Office for Mac?

Do not buy the "Home and Student" version for $139.00 as that is Mac Office 2011 which will soon be replaced by Mac Office 2014 due out this Fall. However, the Office 365 version is the latest and can be upgraded for free. You may not be in the market for leasing software, in that case, wait for Office 2014 or use Keynote in the meantime.
