Nikon makes a cheapy, the d40. It's not a camera I'd reccomend unless you're absolutely on a tight budget and have to buy new, as you can find used d50's for cheaper as well as used Canon D rebels and maybe even XTI's The D40 doesn't have an AF motor and depends on lenses with built in AF. If you read the I just got my D40 thread, you'll see exactly what the case is. Also, when you go do buy, the two major things you want to buy on, imo, are going to be feel of the camera and lenses choices / prices. Go find a camera store (ritz/kitz/wolf, bestbuy, circuit city, etc...) that carries the brands you're interested in and pick them up and see how they feel in you hand. Also look at what type of photography you're going to be doing and then look at the lens selections and prices from each brand. There are going to be some leses that are cheapr than others, it doesn't mean that they'll give you a band picture, but they may have some traits that are undesirable in a $70 lens vs. a $1000 lens. In my opinion, Canon has a pretty good low end lens selection, but with 3rd party support for the other brands, it almost negate it. In fact, the 4 lenses I'm going to end up with before I contemplate any others are all under $500 except for the behemoth 70-200mm f/2.8l is. If you get a chance and don't know much about the lens designations, go to depreview and start looking around, there's a lot there that will help.
