I hope this is in the correct forum...
If not, I am happy for it to be moved.

Basically, here is my situation.

I have a PC, which I wish to connect to the interent via cable, not wireless.
And I have a MacBook pro that I wish to run wirelessly (as naturally it has the nice airport card)

I am looking for information on how to set this up and recommendations on what wireless router I should use (as I believe that is the way i need to go about it)....Am i right in saying I can get a modem, plug it into a wireless router, which can connect via cable to my pc and wireless to my mac?

I am new to the business of routers and such, so am i also correct in saying
a router acts as i kind of hardware firewall?

I would greatly appreciate any advice you have to offer,
Thanks

I have a similar set up My iMac is conneted to my router (LinkSys wrt54g) and my wifes laptop pc is wirelessly connected. My sons iMac connects wirelessly too.

It should just be a question of Conneting your router to your modem then just connecting your PC via a networks cabel to a port in the router.

I use a Linksys router Many don't but I haven't had too much bother with them so far

routers come with a firewall which you can configure yourself. I just use the default settings

Good luck

Like yourself I had never set up a wireless network before. I just followed the Instructions in the box the router came with.

Keep us posted

personally i think linksys is a good router brand name... they have lots of options for security and customizations... if you are not all that "computer savy" then i'd suggest a Dlink... Less options but still a good amount of options for a secure connection

am fairly computer savvy, though more with software than hardware :)

have heard mixed ideas about linksys...do you have any recommendations at around the £50 price tag. Can you get something suitable at this price???

£50 according to my conversion calculator is $100 plus.

I like this Linksys with the Linux Firmware. I have 2 here. NEVER ONCE had an issue and I have a large network of both wired and wireless computers, both Macs and PC's. Hope that helps.

seems cool, may have to get this as the firmware update looks very promising.

the ethernet cable that comes with it, is it for connecting to the modem.
if so, what do i need to do to wire it to my pc. need my pc wired and my mac wireless?

Yes, it's an excellent router and you can mess with the firmware. I left mine stock so far and in over a year not one drop or lockup.

There is one CAT-5 cable with it. You can use it either to the Modem or to your PC. Are you running Cable or DSL? If the modem has no cable, you would need one more Cat-5 from the Modem to the WAN port on the router. The other cable goes from one of the LAN ports to the RJ45 port on your PC. Then set up the Wireless and use that on your Mac. I just took my iBook on Two Network call today and this evening. Set up two routers and DSL. One was that Linksys WRT-54GL. Worked great.

If you need any help down the road, let us know.
