Ok, it's been a while since jumping up to the lastest os. I have done step releases for OSX. I am at 10.3.9 on a 12" Powerbook with 1ghz and 512 of RAM. I got Tiger. It's 10.4.3. I'd like to install it, but was wondering the best route to take. Oh, what would be the best way to back up my system in case something horrible goes wrong? Could someone take me step by step? I really don't want to wind up losing everything.

Archive and install option will place everything into a system folder for you to decide what to do with ince Tiger has installed. You basically drag from the archived system folder to your new home foler everything you want and then trash the rest. IOr you can back it all up t an external hard disk and do a reformat and install and then drag the items back. However some programs will need to be reinstalled with the original media, Ofiic for example.

The DVD is a 10.4.3 from the developers program from Apple. It looks like a regular copy. It's a black disk with the big X on it and it says "Mac OS X Tiger includes Xcode 2 install DVD Version 10.4.3 2Z691-5599-A." Doesn't look like a machine specific installer. I made a bootable copy of my sys to a firewire drive. It works. I can do an install where it erases my drive, but do i need to? Do i need to get 10.4 first or can I go to 10.4.3 with archive and install?

No, it's 10.4.3 on the install, then use the updates to get you up to date (go figure...)
