Hi,

I am new to these forums and relatively new to emac. I build and fix computers, but the Mac is a different kettle of fish.

Anyway, I recently upgraded the emacs memory with a 512mb stick of pc133 ram - unfortunatley the emac only recognises this stick as 256mb when it is in the top slot and not at all in the bottom slot.

My instinct is that it could be because the ram is double sided, not single sided, could this be the problem, or is there any way I can get the emac to recognise the full 512mb?

Any help would be appreciated, thanks :)

This is from an Apple hardware guide:
"The largest DIMM supported is a two-bank DIMM of 512 MB using 256 Mbit SDRAM devices. The largest bank size supported by the memory controller is 256 MB. The maximum number of devices per DIMM is 16."
Another issue could be RAM speed;the 1 ghz model requires pc 133 modules at 140 mhz, older models use a similar module at 125 mhz. The 125 mhz module would be out of specs for the 1 ghz model. Whatever the reason the RAM isn't correct for the eMac model.

Thanks for the replies

Thanks all, however, forgive me for questioning this statement (as in Apple statement)

The largest bank size supported by the memory controller is 256 MB.

This 1GHz emac is supposed to take 1 GB ram , it has two banks, if each bank can only support 256MB then how can it be possible to upgrade to 1GB?

I got the memory from PC world, it is PNY PC133 non ECC

The bank referred to is on the module itself, not the 2 sockets on the board. Each module can handle 2 banks (sets) of chips with each bank maxing out at 256 mgs. My guess is that the memory is not Mac certified and is out of spec for the Mac. Even though the chip appears to be be Mac-compatible it won't work properly. This is a common problem. Exchange it for a Mac-certified module.

Okay Badger, thanks very much for the help :)

I am not sure where to get mac certified memory from in the UK, but the manual says that any third party should work providing it is 64bit, so I will try crucial who have a great guarantee.

Thanks again.

Crucial have a guide to help you find memory garantueed to work with your mac.

Also you could try one of the many mac retailers in the UK (check mac magazines for info)
