having trouble configuring system

I just bought a G4 Cube from someone with the Mac OSX 10.3.9 system on it. The home icon was named 'new user' as is the name of the computer. I spend endless hours setting up the desktop, configuring my e-mail acct, registering softwares, etc, etc, etc. When I had to shut down the computer bc I was moving items around my desk, I restarted the machine and everything I configured was gone.. all back to the default "new user". I am extremely frustrated!! what am I doing wrong? In the finder window -> system drive -> users - there is a network icon with my name on it. It has all of the files I transfered (ituns music, desktop items, etc) but why is the computer not restarting with the settings I gave it??? I so appreciate any input on this before I pull all my hair out.

"Change you name back to what it used to be using Get Info, then reboot the computer, then go to the blue apple in the left hand top corner, select "System Preferences" did all that ...."then click on Services to change the Computer Name", there's no services icon.. I am using 10.3.9 how can I change my computer name? "if you want to change your short name you'll need to well.. instead of writing it all out, Ill give you this site that already has it written out" the following link did not work

http://cf.williams.edu/oit/faqs/pcounter/changeuser/"

thank you! I think this may help me.

System Preferences/Sharing
Up near the top where it says Computer name, you can change it there.
Also, click on the edit button to change how your computer shows up on networks.

NEVER rename your Home folder, it screws everything up. (not really a good idea to rename any folder the system sets up).
