I switched my wife over to Macs last year and she loves them, but backups have been a problem for her. I setup a nice external hard drive on her iMac, but even that is somewhat of a hassle (turning it on, turning it off, setting up the backup script, etc.). I've been on the lookout for a better solution ever since. Finally it became available from Mozy. A friend of mine introduced me to Mozy a few months ago and I really liked it. It's basically an online backup system that works automatically in the background. The first time you run it, it takes a few days to completely back everything up and then it updates automatically and incrementally behind the scenes from then on. Here's the link:

They didn't have a Mac version out until recently (there's a desktop client you run that hooks up securely to their server). There is a free 2gb account, but for $5 a month you can get unlimited backup space. They also knock a few months off the price if you pay ahead of time. I have a 2-year package for my workstation as well as my wife's iMac. The Mac version is currently in beta but is working very well for me so far. Their backup script is awesome - really easy to use. Just thought I'd pass this along for those of you switchers looking for a Mac-style hassle-free way to do a complete data backup.

I read a review on that recently... I've never been confortable about online storage though - uploading and all is tedious. I'm looking into buying some drives for my home.

Maybe a RAID when I begin earning enough...

Tedious? Nah, completely hassle-free. Set and forget. I do keep local backups as well as online backups however. btw, NewerTech just released an external RAID box that is pretty awesome. You can hook it up via USB2 or Firewire:

I went the file server route; I put together a 1.2-terabyte NAS for around $700 last week. I'm running FreeNAS on it, which is ridiculously easy to install and maintain:

I've been using Mozy for ages now - so happy it's on the Mac! It's a fantastic program and a real blessing for those of us who don't like doing actual backups onto physical media.

I find it tedious because it loads my network with all my data - slows things down. Besides, my iPhoto library is 6.5 GB, so I would have to spend 60$ a year to back that up. (And think of the time it would tae until all that data is actually up and secure).

For 100$ I can get a 250GB Porsche drive that even looks cool.

It's designed to run in the background, specifically when you're not doing anything. Seems weird it would be slowing you down.

Yeah, it should only do that for the first few days. My wife has about 10,000 photos in her iPhoto library...even when doing the initial backup procedure, it only uploads when the network connection isn't being used. If she's surfing the net, it goes into background mode.

As long as I have not updated to Leopard I will continue backing up my files using mozy.
The best thing is that every person that clicks on the link and starts using Mozy, will get another 256MB of free backupspace.
