RadDave...Natty's Buckshot ale packs a lot of flavor and wallop in a singlebottle. My favorite is their Southern Pale Ale...next is Buckshot. When my local grocer is out of both (this understandably happens quite frequently), I grab the Hoppyum! It's obvious you are a man with good taste when it comes to beer.
So...is your preference Lexington style BBQ or Eastern style whole hog w/vinegar based sauce? I was born and raised on the coast...love that Eastern style.

p.s. to all forumites...in Carolina, BBQ is a noun...not a verb;)

Hi Brent - I'm mainly a wine drinker but w/ the explosion of the craft beer industry not only in NC but in many states, I've had a resurgent interest in good beers (vs. the bland yellow ones of the national brands) - we've been to a lot of the local wineries, but must start touring the breweries that have tours & tastings - Foothills in downtown Winston has a rustic restaurant and a flight of beers can be ordered (all in tiny tumblers) which is a nice introduction - wife likes the Southern Pale Ale.

As to BBQ, my main introduction to the NC varieties was after my radiology residency in the mid-70s when I owed the Army a couple of years - sent to Ft. Bragg; so we tried the 'eastern' style in a number of places around the coast and the near interior, e.g. Parker's in Wilson - then moving back to Winston in 1977, we've had a lot of barbecue here - believe that I prefer the hog shoulder but hard to beat either. In W-S, a place just 5 minutes from us is Little Richard's (he started in Lexington, so the style @ his place). BTW, do you have Bob Garner's book on the subject? I have the 2012 (second edition?) on my iPad (inexpensive Kindle purchase) - a recommendation for those wanting to explore the NC BBQ trails - BOY, beer & pig meat! Bon Appetit! Dave :)

I haven't read Bob Garner's book, but I have watched the PBS BBQ episode on UNC-TV that covers BBQ across the state and the different styles. We both agree on beer and pig meat. Then there is the issue on which the proper slaw to serve with the BBQ.
