I am using a Mac. If I open the Activity Monitor and see that a process called "google chrome helper" is using too much CPU, the only answers on the web is to do this:

Chrome > preferences > settings > show advanced settings > content settings (under privacy) and select "Click To Play" for all plugins.

I don't have the "click to play" option.

My pluggins options are
° Run all pluggin content
° Detect and run important pluggin content (recommended) -- this is the one I have selected.
° Let me choose when to run plugin content

In all the advice on the web they say to select "Click To Play". I don't have this option. How else can fix the google chrome helper so it doesn't take so much CPU?

You should choose "Let me choose when to run plugin content" which will get you the "Click to Play" functionality.

I usually tend to run Chrome and leave it running for a long time and eventually some tab goes rogue on me and I just restart to get back to square one again. But preventing ads, videos and other things starting up automatically goes a long way to ensure that things don't go rogue..
