Get G5 Running

Someone gave me a G5. When I start it up I only get a picture of a file with an alternating blinking ? and "Finder" icon. There is a hard drive in it, but is just hanging there. My guess it is not the original HD. Can someone recommend my next step to get this operational. I want to use to scan and organize family photo's for my daughter. Thanks.
