G5 Power

I'm buying a new G5 after the update...I was wondering if it is okay to leave the G5 and the display on all the time without every putting either of them to sleep? I realize that I should shut down and restart them every once in a while....But is my first question a okay?

*nix is built to need as few restarts as possible, so you can leave your computer on as much as you want; however, I'd recommend letting your display sleep when you're not using it.

I agree, it doesn't do the system any good to be fully on all the time, and really is a waste of power. Sleep is a very healthy mode, keeping boards warm while spinning down the hard drive - extending its life and sleeping the display saves a lot of power.

well i heard that the os performs mateniance during late night hours....If i have my systemset to sleep after 30 mins. will it ever perform these tasks? Will I have to manually perform them?

get macjanitor, it's free...and does the same thing.

Yes, MacJanitor is free but is not automated.....Its just a GUI version of the doing the same thing in the command Prompt. Macoroni makes sure that if the tasks did not run when the were supposed to, they will run at the next open time........Macoroni is all automated so i never have to check up on it, it takes care of its selft........BTW : How long do these cron and permission tasks take?

the daily and monthly go pretty fast...like less than a minute....and the weekly...at least for me....takes about 1-4 mins.

maunally by Finder>Applications>Utilities>Terminal type (switch to root) sudo sh /etc/daily every week do the same where /daily becomes /weekly, and every month /monthly (promted for password)

What's wrong with leaving your Mac on? It'll take care of it all for you....

for the following reasons:

1. Sleeping is a healthy state for humans, as is it for Macs.
2. It makes less noise when sleeping
3. It pays for itself. Leaving my Mac on for 4 years will cost much more than having it sleep and buying Macoroni
4. The LCD does that cool sleep indicator things:lol

My Mac is named Ian Iachimoe, which is "Paul McCartney" backwards on a tape recorder. Yup, I'm a Beatlemaniac.
