I have a Dual 2.0Ghz PowerMac G5 I purchased in early 2004. It's been a great computer so far, but about a year ago it started having problems going into sleep mode on its own. I usually have to click Apple/Sleep.
Sometimes I walk away from the computer for several hours and come back and it's asleep. Other times I'll come back and the screen will be off, but the fans are still howling as if it were still in use.
Just recently the fans started acting erratically. If I'm working on the computer, they'll suddenly spin up very fast for a few seconds and then quiet back down to their normal noise level. When I say "very fast", I mean it sounds as if a small animal were walk by, it would likely get sucked into the computer. Much louder and faster than anything I've ever heard before.
I've done some searching and found that the PMU could be the culprit, so I reset it. So far I haven't had any luck.
Any help would be appreciated!
