Assuming that you have tried different brands of DVD there is a distinct possibility that the DVD drive is failing. Is that the original drive?

Just pop a Pioneer say DVR-109/114 in and it will be great. Pioneer works natively with Apple and it is an easy easy job. Just Google 'replace PowerMac G5 opitcal drive'.

I'm not that saavy. This is the original drive but I cannot be sure. Believe it or not this is my newest computer. I had a g4 for years. If it's too complicated I'll just leave it be. I'd hate to ruin a machine that albeit slow, dies all I need. Testament to old Mac stuff huh?

External DVD burners should work with that computer as well. One thing to keep in mind though: Some software, mainly iDVD and other parts of the iLife suite, usually didn't work with an external burner. Toast and many other programs were fine though.
