G3 iMac annoying problem

My 600mhz G3 has recently started to give off an annoying
high pitch noise...

does anyone have any ideas of the source of this noise??

I'm hoping it's not the harddrive.. but I suspect it is since it stops when
the computer is inactive.. and this is before going to sleep

any suggestions?? Could it be the power supply?

generaly a dying hd starts with a whine, or general noise. whining usually indicats cheap/worn/bad bearings or motor, clicking points towards head/servo problems.
