Howard Oakley points out the differences in APFS in different versions of macOS. If you use multiple versions, you might want to read/bookmark this article:

Well-written summary as usual. I've really got to start visiting Howard's site more often.

Sly, I visit every day. He publishes one article a day, typically. Very thorough and very technical.

I had forgotten that he publishes one new article a day. Some of the ones I have raid have been technical enough to make me feel like a preschooler reading nuclear physics for the first time.

Yeah, he is a bit of a polymath. He's a doctor, was in the Royal Navy, a tech guru, app developer, art historian, painter, and did research in Antartica. And oh, yeah, a Mac expert.

Yeah, but can he bake a decent chocolate chip cookie?

Seriously, when does that guy sleep?

Hi Jake - thanks for the link - never knew he was a naval physician (for myself, spent 2 years at Fort Bragg as a US Army Major in the radiology department before my academic career) - I was curious looking over his 'free' software HERE; many seem rather specific and technical, are there any you have used that might be of interest to a regular Mac computer user? Thanks for any suggestions. Dave

Yes, I have a lot of them installed. Some just out of curiosity, some for genuine value. Here is what I have:

Of those Mints, SilentKnight, TheTimeMachineMechanic, and XProCheck are the ones most frequently used. With the new unified log replacing the console log in macOS, you need more tools to figure out what is going on, which each of them does in one way or another. The rest of them I use rarely, and some are there because I just wanted to try them and never got around to deleting them later on.

Thanks Jake for the long list (where does Howard get the time! )! I'll have to look at the ones you use most often - much appreciated. Dave :)
