more features I don't need or use, more eye candy, more RAM and HD space required I'm guessing? I'm having small issues with Catalina, so I won't be updating again for a long time I hope.

So, in other words, Big Sur is replacing CATALINA? What was the purpose of CATALINA at all then? This reminds me of Windows. It took every other platform launch to be any good.

I saw another post which is correct. It's all about the money.

First, Apple has had annual OS releases for years now. So your entire argument about the "purpose of Catalina" is null and void. Second, how can it be about the money when the updates are free? Windows is also releasing new versions of Windows 10 for free, but they do that twice a year, and the updates often brick user PCs or delete files unexpectedly (at least the last three major updates have had a variant of that bug).

I just got Catalina installed on my early 2008 black MacBook, using a patch for it....because it is an unsupported model and I wanted the text message linking function so I can text from the laptop while I am at work, since we are not supposed to play with our phones during work hours.
Catalina works great on it, and although it was a pain to use the patch, I am very happy I did.

Welcome to our forums.

That's quite a feat being able to load Catalina on a MacBook that could only install Lion as the latest version of macOS.

I found a patch tool online, and it seems to work fine, the track pad seems to work only as a mouse, like tapping on it does not click anymore, and sleep is an issue but other than that it works really nice for being unsupported.

...the track pad seems to work only as a mouse, like tapping on it does not click anymore...

Was this due to the Catalina patch...or has it been this way for a while? If it's been this way for a while...and is a 2008 with the original battery...the battery couild be swelling preventing the trackpad physical click.

no it did the tap to click before the Catalina patch. its not really a big deal to have that much newer of an operating system, actually a current operating system, but that is the only things that act different, is the track pad not doing the tap to click and it not sleeping.
