In Safari Preferences > General, you can make it save History for up to one year. I realize that only helps you for future attempts, but you might want to check what you have set. Mine is for one month.

Restoring Safari search history should be possible using Time Machine. Have you tried opening Safari in the background and then open Time Machine? That should allow you to go back in time to a day or even an hour (depending on how often Time Machine is backing up) and restore the state of Safari for that given time.
The best way would be to make a clone of your system and then restore the clone which would include Safari and its history. You would need cloning software to do that: Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper.
