Macbook Pro
Apple M1
1TB harddrive
16GB ram
sonama 14.2.1, now 14.4 after update
14" 2021
installed April 22

just had an issue again this morning , with finder hanging
started when i tried to save an excel spreadsheet , just got the ball spinning
rebooted a few times - no change

- TEXTEDIT would not open

then after leaving alone for an hour or so - its now all OK

looked in disk utility and the harddrive has verified against the status

backed up with time machine and copied a few files off onto a external harddrive - although a lot of my files are kept on icloud anyway

any idea , what maybe happening

software update is available - which i installed today

just thought I would see if anything likely to check or run on the machine

had problem last week with finder also showing ball, and could not get icloud to open , had to remove icloud and setup again

for transparency I did crosspost this morning on
but had 1 reply erase/fix ssd/re-install - but no details on how to do any of that

How full is the drive?

Also, run EtreCheck and see what it says.

You seem to use a lot of appestat require a lot of online sync features. Other than the I would say get rid of Malwarebytes.

Even without running Etre Check I would have suggested two possibilities; insufficient RAM or Insufficient storage for RAM swap.
The easiest way to establish which apps are using up your RAM is Activity Monitor.

Below is a screen shot of Activity Monitor, I have selected the Memory tab at the top next to CPU;

Screenshot 2024-03-16 at 08.44.41.png

At the bottom of the window you will see I'm using a total of 10.54 GB of Memory and Memory Pressure is green. Note that 5.17 GB is Cached Files, temporary files required by eg. Browsers.

The objective is to disable "unnecessary" activities such as background apps, Malwarebytes is a good example. Cached files can be cleared by shutting down the device and rebooting it or running Titanium Software's Onyx app available free.
Having said that, Cached files fairly quickly repopulate because it's data required for system functions.
The real indicator is Memory Pressure, while that's in the green all is well.

Have a look at:

Macintosh Beachballs!
http://www.macattorney.com/rbb.html

Macintosh Slowdown Solutions
http://www.macattorney.com/sd.html

Off the top of my head, I would try turning Dropbox entirely off and see what happens.

If that doesn't help I would totally uninstall any anti-virus programs that you have installed (using the uninstaller program from the developer, don't just drag it to the trash), and see what happens.

When i have the ball come up - i can still use all the apps - like chrome , firefox , calendar
Just can not save excel
or open finder
or open Textedit

---------------

Thanks ferrarr
You seem to use a lot of appestat require a lot of online sync features.
what is appestat??

malwarebytes is provided by Natwest Bank full version for online use for banking , not sure if it checks to see if thats enabled
---------

thanks Rod
I will keep an eye on memory over the coming days
here is a snapshot this morning attached
Perhaps I will leave the Utility running , and see if the ball comes back what the monititor is saying - I wont be able to run it when it happens as I cannot open finder

i'll have a look at Titanium Software's Onyx
----------

thanks Randy B. Singer
I will have a look at those links
the only antivirus / malware software - is malwarebytes

I have an older Macbook, intel CPU and 8GB ram 256GB drive and that was used the same way - but got low on diskspace - and getting old - that seemed to cope with open apps ok

For more info

I do a lot of work on forums with excel - helping people - so often have excel spreadsheets open
I do some work on a website i look after and sale via various sites - all via safari and firefox

I usually have the following running

Chrome - 2 windows - usually with around 10-20 tabs open
Firefox - with 10-20 Tabs open
Safari = with 5 tabs open
Calendar
Whatsapp
Mail - Website emails
Thunderbird - various personal accounts
Notes
Textedit
Excel - with often 5-10 spreadsheet

running Titanium Software's Onyx app available free.
i have just read up a little on Onyx app - not a lot around

anyway - i looked at all the settings and just changed the Browser history , as i do use that a lot - so unticked

the rest i ran
I dont seem to have gained any space at all
so not sure how much it removed

not sure if there is a log file to review what it did when last run -

activity log been on since onyx rebooted the pc, and memory pressure still green

Running three browsers will certainly suck up a lot of resources not to mention two email clients. As computers have evolved to be faster and more efficient browsers and other apps have grown in their resource requirements so although the silicon SoC Apple computers are faster and more efficient than the old Intel processors with the same amount of RAM I still maintain 8 GB is not enough memory, 16 GB is only just enough for me and a "power" user probably needs 32 or more.

As for useage, I can understand the occasional need for two browsers but three? Firefox can easily handle 20+ open tabs and you can use "Groups". For that matter so can Vivaldi and Brave and it's a lot lighter on resources as well as being a lot more secure than Chrome.

Thanks - the browsers where all working fine when the ball was running just on FINDER not responding
i could still move around all the browsers and open pages , sign in etc

Its just the way i like to work
On firefox I am logged in as a different user to a lot of sites used for a business and the website i created
On chrome 2 window sessions , 1 for all the excel stuff i do and then the other window for general website stuff

same for the 2 email clients -
one is for personal email and forums, so 3 email accounts , on thunderbird
2nd is for business - so that users 4 email accounts - on apple mail

and the memory pressure is Yellow

so maybe i should have another look and try and reduce all that , not really necessary

switched off firefox and thunderbird - seems to have a made a big difference to memory pressure
maybe i will rethink what i really need to have open and when

thanks for all the help from everyone

Mac Mini M1 (8gb Memory / 500 gb Hard drive) Running Sonoma 14.0
I find this to be a memory hog, read up what it is used for though not sure what a "Sandbox" is, but I find that when I close the apps with video etc, it does not use any less memory, eventually reaching 2.5 - 3.00 GB, at which point I shut down and it all goes back to normal.

been running over a week, and i have had firefox closed most of the time
and been doing a lot of excel - checking the memory on utility as its left open now
just closing lid - no reboot or anything
copied various stuff to and from icloud drive - BUT did take of the lptop 500GB+ of data onto an external drive day 1
adding various notes & textedit files
running faultlessly at the moment

so will see what may happen next
