external monitor font sharpness?

hello everyone.

i went out and bought an HP w2207, which i love. res is 1680x1050.

looks beautiful. anyways, the text is all sharp on the edgesd, whats going on here???

looks absolutely terrible...

Well it looks okay to me, but perhaps font smoothing is turned off? Have a look in System Prefs -> Appearance.
