Hi All

I hope someone can help me please.

I have a 3TB Promise disk connected to a Mac Mini running OS/X Yosemite and Mac Server.

When I try to copy a file to the unit (regardless of it's type) I receive an Error -36 when using Finder.

The error message is:

The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX” can’t be read or written.

(Error code -36)

I have used Admin and my account. We both have full control.

Can anyone help or point me in the right direction please?

Many thanks

Robert

What is a Promise disk?

Obviously it can't either Read or Write the file which either indicates a problem with the Hardware or Unix permissions.

To fix Permissions repair the drive in Disk Utility, or unmount/remount the disk.

Test all the hardware:

Shut down the Promise disk and restart it.

Change Cables

Change Connections eg USB 3.0, FireWire, SATA, Thunderbolt, Ethernet, whatever is available.

Run Disk Utitity, Disk Warrior etc on it to see what that reports.

See if some other hardware can read/write to the disk.

Change the RAID configuration if that is possible without losing Data.

Thank you for your reply.

A Promise disk is a external raid unit.

How about telling us which Promise RAID unit you have (which model)? Promise units are setup for both Mac and PC. If your unit is for a PC then it's definitely formatted to NTFS as chas_m has asked. If it is formatted for NTFS, you will be unable to write to it and get an error 36.
