Erasing data on DVD-RW or CD-RW

I haven't found a facility in iTunes to erase a DVD-RW or CD-RW to burn new data as I would do in Nero for example (in Windows). Does this mean I would need to buy an additional app for this?

Have you popped a disc in and gone to Disk Utility?

Thanks both for the info. I wasn't aware of the disc utility function and hadn't managed to locate anything in the "Help" function or via other searches.
