I copy to desktop and click the attach button inj Mail. And provide all relevant details:-

If your photos are in iPhoto (or Aperture), then when you open up a new message in Mail, just click on "Photo Browser" (top right) and it will allow you to scroll through all your photos. Click on as many as you wish to send, and drag them into the message part of Mail. Having done so, you then have the option of choosing the file size (eg original, small, medium, large).

There are several ways to do this. The easiest and most elegant (if you use iPhoto) is simply to mail them directly from iPhoto.
