email with attachments, problem help required.

When sending email with attachments with either Mail, Netscape mail or Thunderbird the message rapidly sends 60% then hangs. Each application has the same problem so I think it is in the OS

Inward mail is ok and outward text only no attacments is fine.

Suggestions appreciated.

ISP is ok as sending through PC with same adsl modem.
