email keeps reappearing as "new"

i have a small problem where my emails keep showing up as "new." After I look at them and delete them, the next time I check for email they all come back and i have to start all over again with the deletion process. I looked all over in settings for something to check or uncheck but couldn't find anything. I thought i remember a "delete from server" button somewhere but now I can't locate it. Is it on the actual aol website that i need to do this? Any help would be great!!
