I would very uch like to upgrade fro 10.6.8 to El Capitan, but when I attempt to do so I a warned that, amongst other items, Microsoft Office 2004 is not supported. I'm now proposing to switch to Microsoft Office 2011 (unless someone advises me that it's terrible), but does El Capitan support this version?

Have you considered Office 365? I had a 2007 iMac that I installed 2011 on and it was dog slow.

Microsoft Office 2011 is fully supported in El Capitan (I'm currently using it), however, you should make sure that other software you have is likewise compatible. Since you did not mention which Mac you have, consider that you may need to add memory to properly run El Capitan.

Talking about Office 2011, which I also use and is great, a new release in the last few days Charlie to version 14.6.1. Something to do with preventing a hacker writing to memory or something similar.

If you're going to upgrade Office, why not go for 2016 instead of an "intermediate" upgrade to 2011? I don't like the concept of 365 so I've chosen to wait until 2021 for the next upgrade since there is no discount for a 2011 owner buying 2016 outright.

LOL, if you're waiting for Microsoft to give a discount on an upgrade to Office.... which nursing home do you want us to send your update to? :p

Really? What makes you think 2021 will be better than 2016? After being a beta tester I will not leave 2011 and no guarantee things at MS will get better with time.

You keep reading things into my posts that I didn't comment on. I merely have stated that I will be keeping 2011 for now, and waiting for the next upgrade, which I've called 2021. That's it. No reviews of future products, no evaluations, no predictions of cost, nothing. Just skipping 2016.

Just skipping 2016.

Good decision. I made the mistake of purchasing 2016 which has proven to be thus far "A White Elephant". I may decide later on to use it if MS makes further improvements that they have so far promised but put on the back burner.

I'm thinking of upgrading to El Capitan from Mavericks, and have Office 365, I thought that when you purchase Office 365, you actually are getting Office for Mac 2011? and does this work fine with El Capitan? ( I have a late 2013 Macbook Pro, 8 gig memory)

I have Office365 and the Word version is shown as 15.18. Don't know how that compares to Word 2011. I'm running El Cap.

thanks Jake! my subscription renewed last month -- I've got Mavericks, maybe that's why. I'll contact Microsoft and see what they say.

I've got 2011 because my os x version is 10.9, if I upgrade to El Capitan I can download 2016. I might do that.

You're correct. Office 2016 will not install or run on any version of OS X prior to El Capitan. As I've mentioned many times before.... I see no improvement over 2011 with 2016; and as a matter of my own opinion, it's actually less capable. Now having said that, I'm not an Excel user and do very little with Powerpoint. My use is mostly with Word. So, take what I say with a grain of salt. ;)

I can't say I'll ever need or bother to up my old MS Office 2008 that only very seldom gets used these days and nice to read your comments of 2016 over 2011, but it seems one can install MS Office 2016 in Yosemite according to this:
"Requirements
Intel
OS X 10.10 or later"
http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/54686/microsoft-office-2016

But then it seems I'd also need a Microsoft Office 365 subscription as well… to keep it reasonably updated…no thanks.

You're right. Minimum requirement is Yosemite not El Capitan. But you don't need a 365 subscription to keep it updated provided you purchased the stand alone version of 2016 (which is what I did). I believe we will see some major improvements in Office 2016 sometime this Summer. Microsoft has issued some nice updates to the iOS version of Office 2016 which I do use in conjuction with OneDrive.

Word 2011 is 14.6

I'm running Office 2011 on my MBA and Office 2016 on the iMac. Both work just fine on El Capitan.
