I tried plugging it in and powering it on, didn't work. I really need to know if its fried or not because there are some family pictures on there, and I want to know if I have to disassemble it or if I can replace the part. I want to keep the MacBook Pro

here is a picture of where the battery was

Does the MBP not work purely plugged into mains with the battery removed? If it did, you could go that route to grab the photos and put them in a separate place.

Otherwise, unless you can find a replacement battery really cheap, it'd be hard to recommend spending money on a 12 year old machine, but you do say you want to keep it, so perhaps it makes sense to you.

Thread title says..."battery exploded"...I'm not seeing much explosion damage;)...maybe it was just bulging.:)

As Ashwin advised...try to find a low cost replacement battery. Good quality batteries will sell for around $80-$100 (maybe more than the computer is worth). Lower cost batteries via eBay may cost around $30...and possibly be of lower quality.
