DVD software that does screencaps?

Right, so the one thing I was most disapointed with when I got my mac was that you can't screen cap in the DVD player that came with. The thing is, the DVD drive on my PC is broken, and my Dad doesn't seem to be about to fix it any time soon. And I do a lot of graphics/animation work with images I have capped from DVDs.

I was just wondering, are there any DVD player programs around that let you cap frames?

And (this may be a long shot) do any of you know of any free downloads of such programs? (I'm trying to cut down on my spending for a while now due to the fact I have a holiday to pay for pretty soon)

If you press apple-shift-3 you'll get a picture of your entire screen saved as "Picture-1.pdf" on your desktop. Apple-shift-4 lets you select an area, and pressing space after apple-shift-4 lets you choose a window to take a picture of.

Tried that. Doesn't work. When I open the image the space where the clip was just turns to a black space.

Play the DVD in VLC and you can do screenshots. Attached is one full screen and one in a window.

EDIT: One thing to note is that you can not take a shot of just the VLC window itself for some reason.

VLC? Will this have come with my eMac? Because I've just had a look, and all I can see that will actually play a DVD is called 'DVD player', and I can't cap with that.
*Feeling somewhat dim*
