• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

Hello. Not sure where to p[ost this but I need some advice. For many years on my old iMac I created and burned DVDs with movies. photos, music, text, etc. I burned those DVDs o n the Mac but when it died (it was an antique) I bought a brend new iMac which of course has no DVD drive. The people at the Apple store suggested - no problem just buy an external drive. That leads to my question.

I assume I could still create those projects onmy new iMac with Phots. iMovie, etc but would I be able to burn the DVD externally? I fso are there recommendations on what to buy

Thanks for any advice

Until recently I used the second drive in this list from OWC. I wouldn't have spent that much at the time but I needed Blue Ray burning at the time and that wasn't cheap.

If you don't need Blu Ray burning you can get off much cheaper with some of their other offerings. They are also very good at answering Mac-related tech questions about the gear they sell.

I had to replace that drive recently due to it being dropped a few too many times. I replaced it with this drive. I haven't tried to burn anything yet but it has been playing DVDs fine.

There were cheaper options available.

Hi Jim B. Like you I live in the UK and when I opened the Link, it took me to the appropriate item - but it says Operating System: Linux, Windows 8, Windows 7.

No mention of Macs at all.

Ian
Agreed, but it just plug and played :) - If you read the product information further down the page, it mention Macs ;)

More iMovie questions from completely baffled Poppi. I opened iMovie, opened projects view, clicked create new and New Movie. I then tried to import photos into a new project (trying to create a slide show that I can burn to a DVD).In iMovie I clicked on “My Movie” and clicked on the down arrow labeled import media. This is where I get lost. Under the devices on the left of the import window are listed Mac hard drive ad Time machine. Neither of those lists the photos app.

Obviously, I am missing something

What you're missing is that iMovie is asking for specific photos - the Photos app is not an image, and it stores pictures in a library. Maybe you can test this out by selecting either a specific image, or a folder with images in? If that works, then it may be that you will have to export the photos you want from Photos into an ordinary folder, and from there into iMovie.

Bottom line: have a look yourself on YouTube for iMovie tutorials particularly those which deal with importing photos.

Hi, Poppy. If you have the Photos app, then in iMovie click on My Media and then Photos. This will give you access to your Photos Library. Screenshot 2024-12-12 at 21.07.38.png
