• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

DV tape>FCP: import broken into extremely short clips

I have a Canon DV camera and dozens of old tapes. Recently I've tried several of my recordings and all transfer to FCP without much trouble. I have two tapes that are a 1st generation dub from the master, which I do not possess. Watching these recordings on the camera's viewfinder, they seem to play fine. However, when I import either one into FCP 10.4.8 it is broken into extremely short pieces, which are too short to work with (several clips per second). I'd really like to digitize these, but I don't know how to get them into Final Cut. BTW I had the same problem when I tried iMovie.

Possible dodgy lead...?

I presume that it's the same lead used in both FCP and iMovie.
Can you try another lead?

See if you can borrow another dv camera and use the same tapes. Then if all OK, then it suggests the Canon is at fault. If not OK it suggests the tape, but given that all seems good on viewfinder, that seems unlikely....

Good luck

Yes. I had the same problem with iMovie and miniDV tapes. I think it was I upgraded to the current(v10) iMovie. I've since moved on to AVCHD, so no longer a problem, but it was annoying.
