What would cause the download speed to become much slower? I'm also frequently finding that sites only partially download and I have to start the download over again.
I have a broadband connection.
I haven't added any new programs or done anything to change the computer. It is an iMac.

Good up, poor down.

Are you running through a router? If so it may be a port forwarding issue.
And also, what are you downloading and from where? If it's torrents you may just be grabbing stuff that is popular and has few seeds and many peers. Makes a big difference.

Another consideration is if you are using a download manager of some description as they can present problems, and restarting the download is typical.
