Hi Guys,

I haven't had a chance to upgrade to macOS Sierra yet, still running El Capitan. Since High Sierra is coming out tomorrow I like to get the download to macOS Sierra from Apple. Don't want to upgrade to High Sierra yet until they get the Fusion drive figured out.

You can download the Sierra installer right now without upgrading until you're ready. Open the App Store on your Mac and go to its Preferences. Temporarily turn off the option to automatically install OS updates (uncheck the option). Not sure this is absolutely necessary but it's a good idea. Now do the following:

1. Log in to the App Store if you are not already logged in.
2. Download the installer from the App Store as usual.
3. The download will begin. When the message appears offering to let you continue the installation do not continue.
4. The installer should now be in your main Applications folder. you can either leave it there, move it to another drive, or create a bootable installer.

Yes this will work, if you're quick about it:)

Go to the App Store on your Mac > Updates and macOS Sierra should still be available.

Download it. When the download has finished, stop things there. It should be in Applications. Move it to an External Hard Drive (EHD) or some other safe storage. It can then be replaced in Applications if/when needed. Moreover, as you've downloaded it, it will always be available in the Purchased section of the App Store.

Another thing you could consider, is using Diskmaker X to create a bootable version of Installer macOS Sierra on a USB stick of at least 8GB capacity.

The additional advantage of this is that you would not only have the Sierra download on an EHD, but in the future, you could use the bootable version to boot into your Mac, and do a clean install of your Mac; rather than just overwriting your existing OS.

OK. If you are at that screen the installation hasn't taken place so you are still good. Open the Applications folder and you should see the installer there. Copy the installer file to another drive or to a different location on your current drive. Once that's done you should be able to back out and close the installer.

Single click the flash drive and choose Get Info from the Finder's File menu (command i). If the drive is formatted FAT 32 you'll need to reformat it which can be done in Disk Utility. I'd use Mac Os Extended Journaled. Be sure to backup any files before formatting.

Thread moved to the macOS area as it seems more appropriate than the Switcher's forum.

Thank you Slydude, so far so good. Downloaded it to the flash drive after reformat. :)

Backing out and closing the installer, what do I do go to applications and put the installer in the trash?

@IWT "Moreover, as you've downloaded it, it will always be available in the Purchased section of the App Store." I don't see it in the Purchased section.

No you won't because you have it currently. But in the future, it will always be there.

Thank you for the info. I didn't know that. :)
I didn’t know that either, and, as of this morning, still don’t. I hope later today, that it is true. I do have a USB installer, but the version on there is 10.12.0, I will download the updated version 10.12.6, if it becomes available.

Interestingly, I see all versions of OS X that I've downloaded on my Apple ID through OS X El Capitan, but I do not see macOS Sierra on there. That seems a bit odd..

That is what I was afraid of. I just started downloading High Sierra, and Sierra, is sill not listed under the Purchased section in the Mac’s App Store. I’ll check later on too, but I have a feeling, this will be SOP, from now on.
