Assuming by stuff up you mean screw up, yes.
DO get a book on linux.
DO NOT type rm -rf / ,that will erase your drive.

Ahh the days on red hat where I accidently unmounted the drive and fsck'ed it Oh what fun!

Many years ago, I was once called to repair a system that someone had typed rm -rf in the root directory. They thought they were in /tmp - a simple mistake. The consquense of this mistake was 12 hours of empty cargo jumbo jets flying around the world as this was the cargo handling and customs clearance system. Without this, cargo stayed in sheds but the aeroplanes had to keep to their schedule.

Be very careful with your root account.
