I'm relatively new to the Mac and am wondering if most people enabled the firewall on OS X or not? If so, do you use any special settings?

I have it enabled and leave it at the stock settings. Haven't had any problems yet, so I figure why try and fix what isn't broken? ;)

I use it, keeping file sharing off. I'm also behind a router. Doing this seems to be effective.

Yeah of course, there's no reason not to have it on. It knows that you want to share and leaves those ports open. That's apple - zero config.

I have mine on, and a few select ports open for various programs.

Is the built in firewall off by default? I just turned mine on right now. So does this mean people who still have there's off but have no problems are lucky? Or is really OSX that great?!

You can click "Advanced" for two more options and to turn on the log. After 10 or 15 minutes, click on "Open Log" to read it.

Hmmm this has me wondering - I looked at my built-in firewall and it is on but no blocks are checked. Which ones would you guys suggest I mark without interfering with normal internet, IM use?

These are the settings I use, Papa. Check out the screengrabs below...

My iMac G5 acts as a server for the HP Laserjet printer that's why you see printer sharing on. Since we are behind a router, I feel pretty safe. :girl:

It's for the most part, automagic. As you turn sharing services on, the firewall will automatically let that traffic through.
