I just purchased a WD My Book 500g external hard drive. I partitioned the drive with disc utility (350g ''main'' and 150g ''extra''), which deleted all the software and drive managers that were on the hard drive. I then backed up with super duper. Then tried messing around with time machine, and my system abruptly shut down. I remember reading somewhere about firmware updates for the MY Book, which I found and installed.
Do I need to download/install the drive manager from WD? It seems to be fine without, but how do I know?

You don't need the "Drive Manager" software from WD as it's not needed for OS X. It's only for use on older BIOS enabled PCs which natively do not support a drive of that size.

You probably should have kept the backup software that came with the drive. I believe WD supplies an OS X version in addition to one for Windows.

Regards.
