I've managed to get somewhere! Before I admit defeat I thought I'd just leave the Mac plugged in, turned on, with a bootable USB stick inserted. A shot in the dark. Left it a few hours and when I can back the installation screen was displayed! I ran the diskutil list command and the hard drive isn't listed. Could it be that all that was wrong was a dead hard drive? I don't see any corrosion etc. I think I'm going to clean it up with isopropyl alcohol and try my luck. I've stripped the screw that holds it in so I'm going to have to fix this issue first. FML
