Not sure where to post this. I have 2 external hard drives, one for time machine and one for iMovie and photo files. I recently upgraded the Photo EHD and transferred the files from the old to the new. After a little work I am able to open Photo from the new EHD but when I go into system references to select files for the desktop and screen saver photos (have always used the Photo file for those) I no longer am able to select that group. The pictures in that group do not appear as an option. Suggestions will be appreciated.

Thank you

Did you format the "new" drive as Mac OS Extended Journaled (HFS+)? If you didn't, or the drive is not formatted as HFS+, then the system may not see it as a system useable drive?

Looking at "Get info" this is what I see for that drive = Mac OS Extended (journaled) and I am able to open the "Photo "program which is stored there.

Yup, that’s what it should be. That’s good.

You probably need to set the path to the folder of desktop photos you want to use.

In old OS X verions the System Preference usually had an option to choosde "Other". Select it or use the "+" to add one and then navigate to the folder of photos you want to use.

Thank you Patrick. Went to desktop in systems preferences clicked on source and the + sign. It listed iMovie events (no photos there) and photos library. I think the latter is what I need but it is greyed out so cannot specify it. Again, when I open the Photos icon in the dock that file is the Ehd does open

Using that method, you should be able to navigate to any folder you want anywhere that has the folders with the photos you want to use.

I will admit that Apple didn't make it super easy, but you may want to go Googling for an illustrated method to accomplish what you want to do, and include the macOS version you are using as Apple seem to change the way things are done and with permissions Etc.

I'm sorry it didn't work for you, but I suspect that you may be using many more photos for your screensaver than I would normally even consider using.

Another suggestion, but I don't know if it would work, would be to make an alias of the folder that has the photos you want to use and create a link to that folder alias for your screensaver photos.
